Our Model

Over the past year, we have supported several organizations to meet their AI literacy goals or started the conversation around AI and digital literacy. You can read more about our work here.

How we reach communities

DemystifyAI provides community members with a practical AI readiness curriculum, which is especially important for community organizations. Our curriculum is designed with the everyday community member in mind, foregrounding lived experiences and community input to co-create interesting, relevant, and impactful curricula. We do this through:

Nonprofit Co-Creation

Partnering with digital inclusion organizations to reach their constituencies, including multilingual and underrepresented populations. Partners adapt the curriculum for community-specific needs (e.g., language translation, local platform examples) and integrate it into existing programs, with our support

Direct Delivery

Direct content delivery to different community members who we can reach and/or who may not be reached by existing organizations

What a partnership involves

What this looks like varies by organization. Most often it's workshops, and we decide together whether that means a standalone session or a series. Some partners have asked us to cover one specific topic — deepfakes and privacy, for example — in a 90-minute workshop, then followed up with a second session on practical applications. Others have taken our curriculum and integrated it into their existing digital literacy programming.

We recommend that sessions run 1–2 hours each. The partnership itself is project-based and lasts as long as it needs to — we will keep in touch until we both feel the goals we identified at the start have been met.

What we bring

  • Instructors, at no cost to your organization
  • Curriculum tailored to your community
  • Slides, instructor guides, and handouts — open-source and yours to reuse, but please let us know if you do!
  • Pre- and post- session surveys, and their outcomes

What we ask

  • A room, a date, and organizing participants
  • Some staff time, so we can agree together on what the workshop covers
  • A projector and HDMI cable, where possible
  • Devices, if a session needs them — participants can bring their own, or you can provide them

There is no minimum number of participants, although sessions work best with more than three or four people. Most of our workshops have around 20 people or fewer, but we have also presented to larger rooms. Our curriculum is built for adult learners and high-school students and up, with low-to-medium digital literacy. The goal is not to make anyone an AI expert, but to build solid foundations and create space for good discussion.

We deliver workshops in English, and our curriculum is also built for an American audience. If your community speaks another language, our co-creation track is a good fit: you would adapt the materials for your community, and we can support you through it.

We work on DemystifyAI alongside our other commitments such as school and full-time work, so our bandwidth may vary. If you're interested, please reach out to us, and we will be honest with you about our capacity.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed for individuals with basic digital literacy and is structured to develop low-to-medium AI fluency. Its modular design allows organizations to mix and match content for maximum relevance. Workshops are discussion-focused, hands-on, and demo-based, emphasizing learning by doing.

Module 1: "AI Foundations"
  • What AI Really Means
  • AI in Your Daily Life
  • Debunking Myths
  • AI Accountability
Module 2: "Limitations and Risks of AI"
  • AI-Enabled Scams, Phishing, and Manipulation
  • Protecting Your Data
  • The Limits of Algorithms
  • Environmental Concerns
Module 3: "AI as a Tool – Practical Applications"
  • Prompt-Engineering and Using LLMs
  • Information and Learning Tools
  • Language and Communication Tools
  • Accessibility Features and Document Analysis

You do not have to use the whole curriculum — most of our partners pick the pieces that are most salient for their community; we will work with you to figure out what those are.

We continuously iterate on our curriculum and add to it, creating modules on workforce development, creative capabilities, and resources for high-school students. Our modules are informed by AI fluency goals and research in AI literacy. As AI progresses, we believe these modules serve as foundational for community members that further curriculum builds upon.

Impact Measurement

We measure our impact in two ways: short- and long- term. We track our short-term impact through pre- and post- surveys to assess participants' AI knowledge and confidence after a workshop. We track our long-term impact through the aggregate analysis of survey outcomes over a period of time and look to see if over time participants feel a greater sense of confidence about their knowledge of AI and using AI and can explain it accurately. We also look for indicators of comfort and agency in participants. We hold ongoing conversations with our partner organizations to evaluate our curriculum's integration, relevance, and community-specific impact.
